Synopsis
Wonderland (2003) is a crime drama directed by James Cox — watch it online on iFILM. Val Kilmer plays John Holmes, the most famous adult film actor of the 1970s, caught at the centre of one of Los Angeles' bloodiest unsolved cases. On the morning of July 1, 1981, four people were found bludgeoned to death at a house on Wonderland Avenue. Holmes knew the victims. Holmes was there. What he actually did — that's the question the film never fully resolves.
Cox structures the story as competing testimonies: two irreconcilable accounts of a robbery gone catastrophic, a mob-connected dealer's revenge, and a man too far gone on cocaine to make reliable decisions about anything. Lisa Kudrow and Christina Applegate play the women closest to Holmes; Carrie Fisher, Dylan McDermott and Josh Lucas fill out a world where everyone is compromised. The performances carry the weight the fractured narrative asks of them.
What makes it land differently from standard crime fare is the refusal to settle the truth. Holmes gave conflicting stories until his death in 1988, and the film holds that ambiguity intact — not as a cop-out, but as the point. Drawn from police files and interviews, the story sits alongside the Manson murders as one of the cases that defined how dark celebrity L.A. could get. Stream Wonderland (2003) online on iFILM.
