Synopsis
Dirty Pretty Things (2002) is Stephen Frears' London-set crime thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A night porter unclogs a hotel toilet and pulls out a human heart. From that moment, staying quiet is more dangerous than speaking up.
Okwe (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a Nigerian doctor with no papers, pedaling a delivery bike by day and working the front desk by night. Senay (Audrey Tautou), a Turkish chambermaid, is dodging immigration officers. Both stumble onto a trade running out of the hotel's back rooms: a kidney for a forged passport. The smiling manager Juan, played by Sergi Lopez, runs it. Neither of them can call the police, because the police would simply send them home.
Frears turns the camera on the city's invisible workforce, the people changing the sheets while everyone else sleeps. Steven Knight's script earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay, and the film remains one of British cinema's sharpest looks at migrant life. Quiet, brutal, never preachy.
