Synopsis
A Field in England (2013) is a British psychedelic horror film directed by Ben Wheatley — watch online on iFILM, starring Reece Shearsmith, Michael Smiley, and Peter Ferdinando, shot in stark black and white.
English Civil War, seventeenth century. A small band of deserters flees a battle and crosses an open field, where an alchemist named O'Neil takes them captive. He is convinced treasure is buried somewhere beneath the earth and forces the men to dig for it. The only food available are the mushrooms growing in dense clusters across the ground. What follows is not an adventure — it is a slow unraveling, as the men hallucinate, turn on each other, and lose their grip on what is real and what the field is doing to them.
Wheatley made this on a tiny budget with deliberate, confrontational strangeness: long hypnotic tableaux, sudden bursts of violence, and a structure that resists easy reading. It is not a horror film about what lurks outside — it is about the dissolution happening within. Demanding, strange, and unlike most things labeled as genre cinema.
