Shithouse

Shithouse (2020) is a low-key college drama you can watch online on iFILM — written, directed by, and starring Cooper Raiff in his feature debut. His character Alex is a miserable freshman who calls his mom every day, can't figure out how to talk to anyone on campus, and ends up at an off-campus party mostly by accident. There he spends a night wandering around with Maggie (Dylan Gelula), his dormitory's resident assistant, who seems to have no problem with the world Alex finds so difficult.

They talk about a dead turtle, their families, what they're afraid of. It's awkward and real, and the morning after is worse in exactly the right ways. Raiff won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2020, and the film earns it: for a debut made on almost no budget, it has a precise sense of how loneliness and connection collide when you're eighteen and everything is new and terrifying.
