Synopsis
The Big Picture (1989) is Christopher Guest's comedy-drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Guest's directing debut takes a sharp, funny swing at the Hollywood machine through the eyes of a newcomer it slowly chews up.
Nick Chapman is a film-school graduate whose short wins a national student award. Suddenly the gates swing open: studio executive Allen Habel dangles a dream deal for Nick's first feature. Then the quiet suffocation begins. Agents, producers and stars reshape his script to suit themselves, the budget shrinks, his girlfriend Susan and loyal friend Emmet get pushed aside, and his original vision fades to a ghost of itself. Kevin Bacon plays the wide-eyed idealist who loses himself at the exact moment he finally gets what he wanted.
Guest builds the satire from instantly recognizable dream-factory types — a chilling turn from J.T. Walsh, early appearances by Teri Hatcher and Jennifer Jason Leigh. It's a light, witty look at how the industry sells you a dream, then reclaims it piece by piece. A treat for anyone who loves stories about the Hollywood backlot.
