Synopsis
The Angel (2018) is a Netflix spy thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Ariel Vromen and based on Uri Bar-Joseph's bestselling book about Ashraf Marwan — President Nasser's son-in-law, a close confidant to his successor Anwar Sadat, and simultaneously the most valuable human intelligence asset Mossad ran in the twentieth century. He held both positions at the same time. For years.
Marwan Kenzari plays Marwan as a man entirely comfortable living in contradiction — patriot, traitor, husband, spy, all at once and never quite any of them fully. The film doesn't offer a clean explanation for why he did it, which is the right call: the real Ashraf Marwan's motivations are still disputed by intelligence historians. Toby Kebbell's Mossad handler is the one who has to trust this man's information enough to act on it before the Yom Kippur War of October 1973 — a war Marwan reportedly gave advance warning of, though the warning arrived too late to change its outcome.
The story remained classified for decades and Marwan himself denied everything until his death in 2007. What makes this more than a procedural is that Vromen keeps the personal stakes as sharp as the geopolitical ones. Stream The Angel (2018) online on iFILM.
