Synopsis
A Twelve-Year Night (La noche de 12 años, 2018) is Álvaro Brechner's drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Uruguay, autumn 1973: three prisoners are pulled from their cells and driven off into the dark.
The army that had seized the country won't execute them in the open. The order is colder — if they can't be killed, drive them insane. Three former Tupamaro fighters are split into separate solitary cells and kept there for over a decade, barely spoken to, sometimes left without light. One of them is José Mujica, who years later would become president of Uruguay. The film stays with them through hunger, silence and the daily fight to hold onto a single private thought.
Antonio de la Torre, Chino Darín and Alfonso Tort don't play poster heroes; they play men coming apart, and Brechner shoots it plainly, with no speeches about freedom. Drawn from what the survivors themselves remembered, it cuts deeper than any slogan — a film about exactly how much a person can take before breaking. Stream A Twelve-Year Night online on iFILM.
