The FBI thought they had him. It was the other way around.
Synopsis
Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger (2014) is an American crime documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger structured it around the 2013 federal trial of James "Whitey" Bulger — the South Boston mob boss who ran the Winter Hill Gang while working as a top-echelon FBI informant.
The arrangement held for decades. Bulger fed the Bureau information on rival Irish and Italian crime families; the Bureau looked the other way at his own operation. He got tipped off in 1994 and disappeared for sixteen years, landing on the FBI Most Wanted list, before he was found in Santa Monica in 2011. The trial is Berlinger's entry point, but the verdict was never really in doubt. What the film examines is the institutional side of the story — how many people inside the FBI and Department of Justice knew exactly what Bulger was doing and chose not to act.
