Synopsis
King and Country (1964) — watch online on iFILM. Joseph Losey's British war drama puts Dirk Bogarde and Tom Courtenay across a table from each other in what amounts to the most stripped-down courtroom film of the decade.
Private Arthur Hamp is facing execution for desertion. His story: he walked away from the front and kept walking for twenty-four hours. Captain Hargreaves is assigned to defend him, expecting a formality. Then he listens. Hamp enlisted because his wife and mother-in-law shamed him into it. He was the only man left alive in his unit after the last engagement. He didn't run. He just couldn't stop walking.
Adapted from John Wilson's stage play, the film shoots in tight black and white with no heroics and no score to soften the ending. Losey keeps everything in close-up. Stream King and Country (1964) online on iFILM.
