Synopsis
One True Thing (1998) is a family drama from director Carl Franklin, available to watch online on iFILM. Ellen, an ambitious New York magazine writer, puts her career on hold to come home and care for her mother, who is dying of cancer.
Ellen Gulden has always idolized her father — George, a charismatic literature professor — while quietly dismissing her mother Kate as merely a homemaker. Months spent at a dying woman's bedside upend that order: Ellen rediscovers the mother she thought she knew and starts noticing the cracks in her father's polished image. Meryl Streep plays Kate without a trace of sentiment, Renée Zellweger carries the daughter on banked anger and confusion, and William Hurt gives the father exactly the right mix of charm and cowardice.
Adapted from journalist Anna Quindlen's novel, Franklin's film isn't afraid of silence — it's about the daily grind of dying and the grudges you never get to air. Streep was up for an Oscar for her work as Kate. It's a heavy but honest watch for anyone ready to think about their parents and the time that always runs short.
