Synopsis
The Phantom of the Opera (Il fantasma dell'Opera, 1998) is Dario Argento's horror take on the classic story — watch it online on iFILM. This has nothing to do with the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical: Argento's Phantom, played by Julian Sands, was raised in the sewers beneath Paris by rats, wears no mask and has no interest in redemption. He is a predator who owns the dark below the Grand Opera, and he kills anyone who wanders too close.
Paris, 1877. Stage workers are dying in the theatre's depths one by one. Young soprano Christine, played by Asia Argento, feels inexplicably drawn to the voice from below, while Inspector Ratier pushes deeper into the catacombs after each body.
Co-produced by Italy and Hungary, the film leans hard into Argento's signature visual language — saturated lighting, visceral set pieces, atmosphere traded for psychological dread. It divides giallo fans sharply, but as a piece of gothic horror that discards the love story entirely, it commits to its own vision without apology.
