Synopsis
The Passionate Friends (1949) — a British romantic drama by David Lean — is available to watch online on iFILM. Mary arrives at a Swiss hotel ahead of her banker husband and finds herself unexpectedly in the room next to Steven, the man she walked away from nine years earlier to marry into money.
What follows is less a love triangle than a study of what gets traded away for security. Lean tells the story through memory and glance rather than chronology — and Ann Todd (his wife at the time) carries the film's core tension with an almost painful restraint. Trevor Howard is raw where she's controlled; Claude Rains plays the older husband with watchful, quietly wounded dignity.
The film shows Lean developing the emotional architecture he'd sharpen further in his bigger pictures — where the real drama is not the event, but the space around it. Stream The Passionate Friends (1949) on iFILM.
