Synopsis
In Which We Serve (1942) is a British wartime drama worth watching online on iFILM. The destroyer HMS Torrin goes down in the Mediterranean, and three survivors clinging to a life raft under fire begin to remember the lives that brought them there.
Their scattered memories build the story of a whole ship, from her launch to her final action. Captain Kinross, played by Noël Coward, drills his crew to stay loyal not just to the flag but to one another. Around him stand an ordinary seaman, played by John Mills, and a chief petty officer in Bernard Miles; back home their wives, Celia Johnson and Kay Walsh, fight the quieter war of waiting. A very young Richard Attenborough turns up in a small part — his first appearance on screen.
Coward did more than play the captain: he co-directed the picture with a newcomer named David Lean, in what was Lean's first turn behind the camera. The idea grew out of the real loss of HMS Kelly, and the Academy handed the film an honorary award for its portrait of a navy at war. Stream In Which We Serve (1942) online on iFILM.
