Synopsis
Silent Movie (1976) is Mel Brooks' love letter to the Chaplin-and-Keaton era, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Brooks directs, co-writes, and stars as Mel Funn, a washed-up director with an audacious pitch: convince a struggling Hollywood studio to let him make a genuine silent film. In 1976. With no dialogue.
To make the project viable, Funn and his two hapless partners — Marty Eggs (Marty Feldman) and Dom Bell (Dom DeLuise) — embark on a star-chasing road show. Burt Reynolds, Paul Newman, Liza Minnelli and others show up as themselves, each encounter collapsing into a different flavor of chaos. The film's best-known gag: the one spoken word in the entire movie belongs to legendary mime Marcel Marceau.
What makes it more than a stunt is how committed Brooks is to the physical grammar of silent cinema — the iris wipes, the exaggerated reactions, the perfectly timed slapstick. It's genuinely funny on those terms, not just clever about them. Stream Silent Movie (1976) online on iFILM.
