Synopsis
Space Battleship Yamato (2010) is a Japanese sci-fi epic you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Takashi Yamazaki — a live-action adaptation of the landmark 1974 anime series. The year is 2199. Earth has been bombarded into ruin by the alien Gamilons; the irradiated surface is unlivable, and what remains of humanity is sheltering underground.
Former pilot Susumu Kodai, played by Takuya Kimura, joins the rebuilt battleship Yamato on a mission to planet Iscandar — 148,000 light-years away. Iscandar holds a device that can scrub Earth's atmosphere clean. The crew has under a year before the underground shelters fail too. Meisa Kuroki and Toshiro Yanagiba play key officers alongside Kimura throughout the 131-minute runtime.
In Japan, the original Yamato anime holds roughly the same cultural weight as Star Wars in the West — Yamazaki leans into that rather than distancing himself from it.
