Synopsis

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1991) is a philosophical comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Tom Stoppard directed his own stage play, casting Gary Oldman and Tim Roth as the two minor Hamlet characters who suddenly find themselves at the center of the story — lost, bewildered, and unable to figure out why they were summoned to Elsinore in the first place.

The two men drift through a tragedy that belongs to someone else. Hamlet rushes past, delivers a soliloquy, and vanishes. Courtiers scheme — Rosencrantz and Guildenstern nod along. Between these episodes of bafflement, they argue about probability and death: a coin flipped hundreds of times keeps landing heads. Is that fate or just statistics? Richard Dreyfuss shows up as the Leader of a traveling troupe of players — a man who performs mortality for a living and finds the whole situation perfectly normal.

The film took the Golden Lion at Venice in 1990. It plays like Beckett rewritten for people who enjoyed Shakespeare in school and want something that rewards paying attention. Stream Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1991) online on iFILM.
