Synopsis
Speech & Debate (2017) is a coming-of-age comedy-drama from director Dan Harris, available to watch online on iFILM. Three teenagers in small-town Oregon have had it with the hypocrisy of the adults around them — teachers, parents, the whole school board.
They could not be more different: a guarded blogger (Austin P. McKenzie), a sharp-tongued go-getter (Sarah Steele), and an awkward new kid (Liam James). Outcasts on their own, together they resurrect a long-dead speech and debate club and use it to drag the town's buried secrets into the open. The stage becomes their megaphone.
Adapted from Stephen Karam's stage play — he later wrote The Humans — the film isn't shy about breaking into the odd musical number. Janeane Garofalo and Kal Penn anchor the adult roles, with quick appearances from Kristin Chenoweth and Darren Criss. A scrappy teen story for anyone who likes their rebellion served with a side of cringe. Stream Speech & Debate (2017) online on iFILM.
