Synopsis
The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985) is Will Vinton's feature-length Claymation fantasy, free to watch online on iFILM. Vinton is the animator who literally trademarked the word "Claymation."
Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher and Huck Finn stow away aboard a fantastical airship piloted by Mark Twain himself. Soured on the human race, the writer is steering straight for Halley's Comet to meet his "destiny" — a polite word for dying with it. The three kids have to talk him out of it, tumbling through a magic portal into Twain's own tales along the way, from the diaries of Adam and Eve to the eerie Mysterious Stranger.
James Whitmore gives Twain his voice, and the film swings from mischief to real dread — the sequence with a faceless figure molding clay masks still turns up on lists of the creepiest moments in "kids" animation. Under the family wrapping sits a surprisingly grown-up conversation about mortality and what a life is actually for. Stream The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985) online on iFILM.
