Synopsis
Sweet Charity (1969) is Bob Fosse's screen musical, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It was the choreographer's first film as director, with Shirley MacLaine front and center.
Charity Hope Valentine dances for cash in a seedy New York ballroom and keeps believing in love, even as one man after another lies to her and cleans out her savings. Every romance ends in another goodbye. Then she gets trapped in an elevator with Oscar, a shy, claustrophobic insurance clerk, and something real sparks — except he has no clue how she earns a living.
The story comes from Fellini's Nights of Cabiria, with songs by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, "Big Spender" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" among them. Fosse's sharp, angular staging would soon define Cabaret and All That Jazz. Sammy Davis Jr. tears into "The Rhythm of Life" as a hippie preacher. A long, bright, bittersweet picture for classic-era fans. Stream Sweet Charity (1969) online on iFILM.
