Lord John Morgan is captured by a Sioux war party in 1825. They put him to work as a slave and name him Horse. Over time the tribe begins to see something in him — or he begins to see something in himself. The only path to belonging runs through ceremonial trials that strip away everything his title and breeding had insulated him from. Judith Anderson plays the tribal matriarch with an authority that carries the film's emotional weight.

Silverstein treated Sioux culture with an ethnographic seriousness that was genuinely unusual for the genre in 1970, consulting on customs and ritual depiction rather than defaulting to Hollywood shorthand.
