Synopsis
"A Child Is Waiting" (1963) — watch online on iFILM — is a drama directed by John Cassavetes, starring Burt Lancaster and Judy Garland.
Dr. Matthew Clark (Lancaster) runs a state institution for intellectually disabled children by firm rules: structured training, clear expectations, no sentimental exceptions. Jean Hansen (Garland) arrives to teach music and immediately starts bending those rules, growing close to 12-year-old Reuben, whose parents have walked away and left him waiting for someone to come back. The conflict between Hansen and Clark isn't cruelty versus kindness — it's a real argument about what kind of help actually helps.
Cassavetes shot alongside actual patients from Pacific State Hospital in Pomona, California, which gives the film an unusual directness that staged productions rarely achieve. Producer Stanley Kramer recut it without the director's consent. Cassavetes disowned the result. Watch "A Child Is Waiting" (1963) online on iFILM.
