Synopsis
The Carabineers (Les Carabiniers, 1963) is Jean-Luc Godard's anti-war satire, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It unfolds in an unnamed imaginary country. Two dirt-poor peasants, Michelangelo and Ulysses, receive a royal summons promising riches in exchange for going to war.
Dreaming of palaces, cars, and beautiful women, the pair march off to the front. What they find is a squalid run of looting and pointless killing, while the boastful letters they send home brag about heroics that never happened. Godard shoots it raw, almost like amateur newsreel, and splices in real combat footage to strip away any glamour war might pretend to hold.
This is one of the harshest, most confrontational films of the French New Wave — a parable about how ordinary men are conned into killing for someone else's gain. At 80 minutes, it rewards viewers who love Godard and cinema that argues back. Stream The Carabineers (1963) online on iFILM.
