Synopsis
The Haunted Palace (1963) is a Roger Corman horror classic you can watch online on iFILM, with Vincent Price in a dual role that lets him play both the victim and the evil consuming him. Released under Edgar Allan Poe's name for marketing reasons, the actual story comes from H.P. Lovecraft — it is an adaptation of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.
In 1765, the warlock Joseph Curwen is burned alive in the village of Arkham for conducting rituals that left the townspeople with disfigured offspring. His dying curse is specific and patient. A century later, Curwen's descendant Charles Dexter Ward arrives with his wife to claim the inherited estate — and Curwen's spirit, still lodged in the palace walls, begins the slow work of taking over his body. Lon Chaney Jr. appears in support, and the film carries the genuine Lovecraftian dread of hereditary doom more effectively than most of the Poe adaptations Corman made in the same run.
