Synopsis

Le Petit Soldat (1963) is Jean-Luc Godard's second feature — watch it online on iFILM. Shot in Geneva in 1960 and held by French censors for three years, the film was banned for showing torture on both sides of the Algerian War. It also introduced Anna Karina, who would appear in seven more Godard films and marry him before the decade was out.

Bruno Forestier is a deserter working as a photojournalist for cover. A far-right cell wants him to assassinate a Swiss radio journalist who supports Algerian independence. Algerian operatives are hunting Bruno in turn. Caught between both sides of a shadow war, he meets Veronica — played by Karina — and falls in love. The politics don't pause for it.

Godard built the film around a man with no real convictions, just contradictions. That's what got it banned. Stream Le Petit Soldat online on iFILM.
