Synopsis
Soul Food (1997) is George Tillman Jr.'s warm family comedy-drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. For forty years a big Chicago family has revolved around Sunday dinner at Mama Joe's — a groaning table of home cooking and three grown sisters, each one stubborn in her own way and hauling her own troubles.
Teri (Vanessa Williams) is the successful, chilly lawyer who needs everything under control. Maxine (Vivica A. Fox) holds the household together. The youngest, Bird (Nia Long), is newly married and can't quite outrun her past. As long as Grandma is at the head of the table, the fights die down over a plate of food. Then Mama Joe's health gives way, the dinners stop, and the glue that bound everyone is suddenly gone. It falls to young grandson Ahmad to put it back.
Narrated by a child, the film talks honestly about money, infidelity, pride and the plain work of being a family — no sugar coating. Babyface's hit soundtrack made nearly as much noise as the movie itself. Stream Soul Food (1997) online on iFILM.
