Synopsis
Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013) is a sun-bleached crime drama you can watch online, written and directed by David Lowery as a slow, aching Texas romance. In the 1970s hill country, a young outlaw couple is cornered by lawmen.
During the shootout Ruth (Rooney Mara) is the one who shoots a deputy, but her man, Bob Muldoon (Casey Affleck), takes the fall and goes to prison. Behind bars he learns their daughter has been born. Four years on, Bob breaks out and starts walking home across the state, toward Ruth and a child he has never met. Trailing him is Patrick Wheeler (Ben Foster), the officer he once wounded, a man who isn't so sure he wants revenge.
Lowery tells it in glances and golden light, with dust on every frame and a guitar score that never hurries. This is a quiet ballad about people who can't let the past go, not a shoot-em-up chase. Keith Carradine anchors the small-town side, and a very young Rami Malek turns up too. Ninety minutes of mood for fans of Terrence Malick and patient filmmaking.
