One Second

A man on the run from a labour camp crosses the sand for one reason: to catch newsreel No. 22, where his daughter supposedly flickers past for a single second. A homeless orphan girl is after the same reel, and the canister keeps changing hands until both wash up in a settlement starved for any movie at all — by which point the print has unspooled into the road dust. Zhang Yi plays the fugitive, Liu Haocun the girl, Fan Wei the town projectionist.
