Synopsis

Under the Hawthorn Tree (山楂树之恋, 2010) is a romantic drama from Zhang Yimou that you can watch online on iFILM. It's the early 1970s, the height of the Cultural Revolution. Jing Qiu, the daughter of a branded political prisoner, is sent to a rural village for reeducation. There she meets Lao San, a young soldier with a promising future.

The pull between them is instant, but a chasm divides their lives. His father holds a senior military post; her family carries the stain of disgrace, and her mother breaks her back on menial jobs just to get by. They must hide their feelings, because one careless word could cost Jing Qiu everything. In her screen debut, Zhou Dongyu plays the girl with such fragile sincerity that every glance lands.

Zhang Yimou, the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, sets aside spectacle here for a quiet, almost wordless tenderness. The film is often called one of cinema's most chaste love stories, drawing its power from what stays unspoken rather than from passion. Slow, mournful and beautifully shot, it's made for anyone drawn to East Asian dramas of the heart. Stream Under the Hawthorn Tree (2010) online on iFILM.
