Synopsis
Cliff Walkers (2021) is Zhang Yimou's snowbound espionage thriller, available to watch online on iFILM. It marks the celebrated director's first true spy film: a winter of betrayal in the 1930s Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, where four agents are compromised before they even hit the ground.
The team of Communist operatives parachutes back from the Soviet Union to smuggle out a witness to occupation atrocities. Their mission, codenamed Utrennya, is doomed from the start — a traitor has tipped off the secret police, who are waiting in the frozen forest. What follows is a deadly game across the city of Harbin, where any contact could be a double agent. Zhang Yi, Yu Hewei, Qin Hailu and Zhu Yawen play people who can't trust their own partners, while a separated husband and wife work the same operation from opposite sides of the gunfire.
Yimou stages the tradecraft like a ballet in the snow: white drifts, sudden blood, neon signage, and the constant sense of being watched. This is a cold procedural about the price of loyalty rather than a popcorn shoot-'em-up, and death arrives without ceremony. A strong pick for fans of Asian noir and dense conspiracy thrillers.
