Synopsis
Ju Dou (菊豆, 1990) is a Chinese-Japanese drama by Zhang Yimou that you can watch online on iFILM. In a rural dye mill in 1920s China, a young woman named Ju Dou has been sold into marriage with a rich and brutal mill owner who beats her for failing to give him a son. Tianqing, his nephew and assistant, watches from a distance.
What grows between Tianqing and Ju Dou is desire first, then complicity. Li Baotian plays the uncle with a deliberate cruelty that makes the atmosphere physically oppressive. Gong Li — in her second film with Zhang Yimou — gives a performance built on restraint: what she doesn't say is louder than anything she does.
The film landed an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, one of the first Chinese productions to get that far. Zhang Yimou frames the mill and its saturated dyes as a trap made beautiful — which is exactly the point. Stream Ju Dou (1990) online on iFILM.
