Synopsis
Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (千里走单骑, 2005) is a Zhang Yimou drama you can watch online on iFILM. Takada, an aging Japanese fisherman, has not spoken to his son in years. By the time the son lands in hospital with terminal cancer, a face-to-face reconciliation is no longer possible.
His daughter-in-law hands him a tape: a year earlier the son had filmed a masked folk opera in China's Yunnan province and meant to go back and finish it. The old man decides to complete the trip himself, traveling through China with no language, no map of local customs, and one bureaucratic wall after another. Ken Takakura carries the lead in one of his final roles.
Zhang Yimou, famous for the spectacle of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, works quietly here, almost without plot — a road, a foreign country, plain Yunnan villagers, and a father learning to understand his son only after it is too late. The film lands through small accumulating moments rather than big scenes. For anyone who loves slow, humane cinema, it stays with you.
