Synopsis

Till (2022) is a historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Chinonye Chukwu. It follows Mamie Till-Mobley — played by Danielle Deadwyler — in the months after her 14-year-old son Emmett was abducted and murdered in Mississippi in August 1955. Two men were accused. An all-white jury deliberated for just over an hour before acquitting them both.

What Mamie did next is the core of this film. Against every instinct to shield her grief from public view, she chose an open casket at Emmett's Chicago funeral — letting photographers document what had been done to him. Those images, published in Jet magazine, landed in households across the country and became one of the catalysts for the civil rights movement. The film traces how a mother's act of refusal — refusing to look away, refusing to let others look away — changed the country.

Deadwyler's performance is the kind that doesn't announce itself. Whoopi Goldberg plays Emmett's grandmother, John Douglas Thompson appears as Medgar Evers. Director Chukwu shoots the Mississippi sequences with a controlled dread that makes the violence all the more suffocating for being partly offscreen. As a piece of historical filmmaking, Till understands that its story isn't finished. Stream Till (2022) online on iFILM.
