In This Corner of the World

In This Corner of the World (この世界の片隅に, 2016) is a hand-drawn Japanese war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Sunao Katabuchi, it follows Suzu Urano, a young woman who leaves her village near Hiroshima to marry into a family in the naval port town of Kure.

Suzu loves to draw and finds small wonders in ordinary days — a mended kimono, a clever meal stretched from almost nothing. Then the war closes in. Rations shrink, air raids grow routine, and the harbor next door becomes a target. The film stays away from the front lines and watches the home instead: the kitchen, the garden, the long wait for news of people who may never come back. Suzu just keeps going.

Adapted from Fumiyo Kouno's manga, the movie reconstructs 1940s Kure from old photographs, painting the doomed town in soft watercolor before the bombs fall.
