Synopsis
Air Doll (2009) is a fantasy drama from Hirokazu Kore-eda that you can watch online on iFILM. An inflatable sex doll in a cramped Tokyo flat wakes up one morning with a heartbeat — and slips out the door alone.
Her name is Nozomi, and she meets the city with a child's unclouded wonder. Korean actress Bae Doona plays the living doll almost wordlessly, all gesture and gaze. Nozomi takes a job at a video rental shop, falls for its shy clerk Junichi (Arata Iura), and slowly grasps what it means to be "empty inside" — a hollowness, it turns out, that half the people around her quietly share.
Working from a short manga by Yoshiie Gōda, Kore-eda trades eroticism for a soft, melancholy fable about loneliness, shot by Mark Lee Ping-bin, the cinematographer behind In the Mood for Love. It premiered in Cannes' Un Certain Regard. Slow, tender and unexpectedly sad — one for viewers who love Kore-eda's half-tones. Stream Air Doll (2009) online on iFILM.
