Synopsis

The Ottoman Lieutenant (2017) is a wartime romance directed by Joseph Ruben, a Turkish-American co-production you can watch online on iFILM. Gera Hilmarsdóttir plays Lillie, an idealistic American woman who travels to a remote medical mission in Ottoman Anatolia. She expects to find a place to do good. She finds Dr. Jude (Josh Hartnett), mission founder Woodruff (Ben Kingsley), and a Turkish military officer named Ismail (Michiel Huisman) who complicates everything.

The year is 1914. The mission sits in the path of what is about to become the First World War. Lillie is pulled between her work, her colleagues' competing claims on her loyalty, and a relationship that has no safe future. The landscape — mountain passes, stone villages, a land caught between empires — is as much a character as the people moving through it.

The film works best as a period love story that refuses a clean resolution, because the history around it doesn't allow for one. Stream The Ottoman Lieutenant (2017) online on iFILM.
