Synopsis
True Believer (1989) is a courtroom drama from Joseph Ruben you can watch online on iFILM. Someone got away with murder — until a burnt-out lawyer with a wild mane of graying hair decides to look again.
James Woods plays Eddie Dodd, once a fierce civil rights attorney, now a cynic who springs drug dealers from jail and believes in almost nothing. His new assistant Roger Baron (Robert Downey Jr.), an idealist fresh from law school, worships the man Dodd used to be. Worn down by the kid's nagging, Dodd reluctantly takes a hopeless case: a young Korean man has spent eight years behind bars for a killing his mother swears he never committed. The deeper Dodd digs, the clearer it gets that the verdict served someone very well.
The film rides on Woods and a baby-faced Downey — raw nerve and stubborn idealism against tired expertise. Kurtwood Smith turns up in support, and a debuting Woody Harrelson flickers past. Solid stuff for anyone who likes the detective work done in a courtroom, not a shootout. Stream True Believer (1989) online on iFILM.
