Whitney
All the music. All the stories. All the answers.
Synopsis
Whitney (2018) is Kevin Macdonald's documentary portrait of Whitney Houston — watch online on iFILM and hear her voice in archival footage that most fans have never seen. Macdonald got inside access: Cissy Houston, the mother who first trained Whitney's voice in the church choir; Clive Davis, who signed her to Arista at 19; Robyn Crawford, her childhood best friend who had stayed silent for decades. L.A. Reid, Dionne Warwick, Kevin Costner — the film gathers people who knew her across different chapters of the same life.
The film's real subject is the gap between the voice the world was given and the person carrying it. Childhood trauma, the weight of being made into a symbol, the marriage to Bobby Brown, the slow erosion — Macdonald lays out testimony and doesn't rush to a verdict. What the film argues, quietly, is that the industry got what it needed from Whitney Houston long before it understood what it was taking.
The archival performance footage alone is reason enough to watch. That voice, stripped of streaming compression and pop-radio context, lands differently at feature length. Stream Whitney online on iFILM.
