The Last Waltz
It Started as a Concert. It Became a Celebration.
Synopsis
The Last Waltz (1978) — watch online on iFILM — is Martin Scorsese's concert film documenting The Band's farewell performance at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving night, 1976, after sixteen years on the road. Seven cameras caught what became one of the most celebrated nights in rock history.
Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris — the guest list reads like a hall of fame. Robbie Robertson, The Band's guitarist and de facto spokesman, was clear in the backstage interviews: the road had cost them everything, and they were done with it.
Scorsese interweaves the concert footage with candid off-stage conversations, turning a goodbye show into a meditation on what it means to spend your life playing music. Stream The Last Waltz (1978) online on iFILM.
