Synopsis
A Bit of Fry & Laurie (1989) is the BBC sketch series you can watch online on iFILM. Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, two Cambridge Footlights alumni, trade absurd two-handers and push wordplay to the edge of linguistic vandalism.
There's no plot to follow, just a steady stream of parody. The targets pile up: the British police, the secret services, the Church of England, broadcast censorship, and politicians led by Margaret Thatcher and John Major. Laurie drops behind the piano for daft songs; Fry delivers monologues that drown their own meaning in grammar. Guests like Rowan Atkinson and Imelda Staunton wander through the odd bit.
Four BBC series turned the pair into fixtures of British comedy years before House and Jeeves and Wooster. The humour is thoroughly English — dry, verbal, built on cadence and nonsense rather than gags. It clicks for anyone who loves Monty Python and treats language itself as a punchline.
