Synopsis
The League of Gentlemen (1999) is a BBC sketch comedy you can watch online on iFILM, and it drops you straight into Royston Vasey — a town whose welcome sign warns that you'll never leave.
Dozens of grotesque locals populate this fictional northern village, nearly all of them played by writers Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. Edward and Tubbs run "a local shop for local people" and despise outsiders. Pauline terrorises the job centre over her precious pens. And then there's Papa Lazarou, whose visits tip the whole show from dark comedy into outright nightmare.
The trio formed their troupe with Jeremy Dyson back in 1995, with Steve Bendelack directing the screen version. The humour runs cruel, surreal and occasionally genuinely frightening — it won't land for everyone, but fans of British grotesque keep coming back to it. Three series turned Royston Vasey into a full mythology, later expanded by a feature film and an anniversary revival.
