Synopsis
This Property Is Condemned (1966) is a Southern melodrama from Sydney Pollack that you can watch online on iFILM. Railroad man Owen Legate steps off the train in sleepy Dodson, Mississippi, carrying a plain and cruel assignment: shut down the rail yard the whole town depends on for a living.
Waiting there is Alva Starr, the prettiest girl in Dodson, used to turning the heads of every boarder in her mother's rooming house. Something neither of them planned for catches fire between her and the stranger who came to ruin them all. Natalie Wood plays Alva, a young Robert Redford is Owen, and Charles Bronson and Mary Badham fill out the smaller roles. The trouble is that Alva's mother treats her daughter like currency, and the town's respectable folk never forgive anyone who upsets the order they live by.
The screenplay grew out of a short Tennessee Williams play, and the film keeps the source's heavy Southern air, where beauty turns into a commodity fast. For Pollack it was an early effort, well before his bigger Hollywood dramas. A sad story about a love that barely had a chance. Stream This Property Is Condemned (1966) online on iFILM.
