Synopsis
A Man and a Woman (Un homme et une femme, 1966) is a French romantic drama directed by Claude Lelouch — watch it online on iFILM. Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant star as two parents who meet at their children's boarding school. The film claimed the Palme d'Or at Cannes and two Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film.
She's a widow — her husband, a film stuntman, died on set. He's a racing driver whose wife took her own life. Neither of them is looking for anything. Their courtship happens in fragments: a shared drive home, letters, phone calls, a long stretch of uncertainty. Lelouch keeps everything tentative and slightly off-balance, which is exactly right — these are two people who know what loss feels like and aren't sure they want to risk it again.
The film moves between black-and-white and color with no explanation, following the characters' moods rather than any logic, and Francis Lai's score has never quite left cinema's collective memory since. Six decades on, it holds up not as a museum piece but as a genuinely felt story about two adults trying to be brave. Stream A Man and a Woman (1966) on iFILM.
