Synopsis
The Desert Rats (1953) is Robert Wise's World War II drama you can watch online on iFILM. North Africa, 1941: Rommel's tanks have pushed the British back toward Egypt, and holding the besieged port of Tobruk falls to a ragtag garrison.
Scottish Captain MacRoberts (Richard Burton) is handed command of a battalion of Australians who bristle at their strict new officer. For months this thin force beats back assaults, runs daring night raids behind enemy lines, and buys the British army time to regroup. Their stubbornness earned them the German nickname that gives the film its title. James Mason returns as the "Desert Fox" Rommel, the role that made his name two years earlier.
At a brisk eighty-eight minutes, it folds real combat footage into staged battles, with Burton commanding the screen in one of his first leading parts. A solid pick for fans of old-school WWII pictures that skip the flag-waving. Stream The Desert Rats online on iFILM.
