Synopsis
The Naked Spur (1953) is a western directed by Anthony Mann that you can watch online on iFILM. James Stewart plays Howard Kemp, a bounty hunter who needs five thousand dollars to reclaim a ranch he lost — reason enough to track a wanted killer named Ben Vandergroat deep into the Colorado Rockies.
He can't bring Vandergroat in alone, so he cuts in two strangers: a worn-out prospector played by Millard Mitchell and a disgraced ex-soldier played by Ralph Meeker. Robert Ryan's Vandergroat spends the long ride back not trying to run but working the cracks between the three men who caught him. Janet Leigh plays his young companion, and she's watching all of it with her own calculations.
Mann and Stewart made five westerns together, and this one is the tightest study of what greed does to people who aren't naturally greedy. Filmed on location in the actual Colorado mountains, it looks better than most studio-bound westerns of the era and hits harder than the premise suggests.
