Synopsis
Beat the Devil (1953) is John Huston's oddball adventure comedy you can watch online on iFILM. A band of swindlers is stranded in an Italian port, dreaming of uranium-rich land down in East Africa.
Humphrey Bogart is the smoothest crook in a crew of bigger ones: Robert Morley's blustering Petersen, Peter Lorre's silky henchman and a pair of liars who fib even when the truth would serve them better. Their rusty steamer never quite leaves the dock while everyone schemes, flirts and double-crosses. A young Truman Capote rewrote the script page by page during the shoot, tipping a noir parody into deadpan nonsense that Huston himself waved off as a lark.
