Synopsis

Missing (1982) is Costa-Gavras's political thriller starring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek — watch it online on iFILM. The film runs 122 minutes and is set against the Chilean coup of September 1973.

Young American journalist Charlie Horman vanishes in Santiago just as the military junta seizes power. His father Ed — a conservative businessman who trusts American institutions with quiet certainty — flies to Chile with Charlie's wife Beth to find him. Their search leads through hospitals, detention centers, and the US Embassy, where every door opens just long enough to show another wall. Ed slowly grasps what Beth already suspects: the diplomats on the ground are not working against the coup.

Based on Thomas Hauser's book and on the documented case of the real Ed and Charlie Horman, the film earned the Palme d'Or at Cannes and four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Lemmon's performance is the film's engine — a patriot methodically stripped of every belief he arrived with. It remains one of the sharpest American films about government complicity ever made.
