Synopsis

The Confession (L'Aveu, 1970) is a Costa-Gavras political drama you can watch online on iFILM. Anton Ludvik, a deputy foreign minister and lifelong party loyalist, keeps spotting the same car outside his home. The surveillance drags on for weeks. Then the agents come for him.

What follows is a single cell, no charge, no sentence, no name for the man asking the questions. Ludvik's jailers want only one thing: a signature confessing he is a spy and a traitor to the very state he served all his life. Sleep deprivation, starvation, staged confrontations — the apparatus isn't after the truth, only the words it has already written. Yves Montand is almost unrecognizable as a man being slowly erased, with Simone Signoret as the wife clinging to his innocence.

It draws on what Czech communist Artur London lived through during the show trials in early-1950s Prague, when yesterday's comrades sent each other to the gallows. Costa-Gavras, fresh off Z, dissects the machinery of a rigged trial coldly, step by step, with no speechmaking. Heavy going, but essential for anyone trying to grasp how a regime devours its own.
