Synopsis

Benjy Stone is the junior gag writer on a hit comedy show when his boyhood idol agrees to appear on it live. Alan Swann was the dashing swordsman of a hundred matinees — but the man who shows up is a charming drunk, a womanizer, and a bundle of nerves the moment a camera points his way. Benjy draws the impossible job: keep the legend sober and upright until Saturday's broadcast.
Peter O'Toole plays Swann, and the part brought him an Oscar nomination and a place among his most beloved performances. The script grew out of the early TV days of Sid Caesar's writers' room, with Mel Brooks among the producers, and underneath the slapstick sits a tender story about growing up and meeting your heroes.
