Synopsis
Adults in the Room (2019) is Costa-Gavras' political drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Athens, 2015: the treasury is empty, the banks are days from collapse, and a brand-new finance minister walks into a fight he cannot win on numbers alone.
The film draws on the memoir of Yanis Varoufakis, the economist who spent six months bargaining for a shred of dignity on Greece's behalf. Most of it unfolds inside the meeting rooms of Brussels — Eurogroup sessions where polite handshakes hide hard ultimatums and every word goes on the record. Christos Loulis plays Varoufakis as a man who trusts logic and arithmetic while the people across the table are playing something else entirely. Valeria Golino, Ulrich Tukur and a cast of European actors put real faces on power.
Costa-Gavras has been dissecting politics on screen since Z, and here he builds a near-chamber thriller with no gunfire at all — the tension lives in pauses, phone calls and signed documents.
