Synopsis
"Johnny Belinda" (1948) is available to watch online on iFILM — a drama directed by Jean Negulesco and set on a fishing island off the coast of Nova Scotia. Dr. Robert Richardson (Lew Ayres) arrives in a small, self-contained community that does not welcome outsiders and does not change its mind easily.
He meets Belinda MacDonald (Jane Wyman), a deaf-mute farm girl who has spent her life effectively invisible to her neighbors. Richardson teaches her sign language. When Belinda is violently assaulted and left pregnant, the village turns against her — and the doctor becomes the only person willing to stand in her corner.
Jane Wyman performed the entire role without a word of dialogue and claimed the Best Actress Oscar at the 1949 ceremony, a remarkable piece of physical acting that holds up completely. The film competed in twelve Academy Award categories, including Best Picture and Best Director for Negulesco. Agnes Moorehead is exact and unsentimental as Belinda's aunt; Charles Bickford is quietly devastating as her father. The community's hostility is not cartoonish — it is recognizably human, which is what makes it cut. Stream "Johnny Belinda" online on iFILM.
